A name of uncertain meaning."In modern dialect a Gatherer works in the harvest fields" (Weekley, p. 116). Gadderar of Cowford were an ancient family in Moray (Dunbar, Moray documents, p. 43). Alexander Gadderar is mentioned in a precept of 1521 (Cawdor, p. 143), and Thomas Garerar Was prebender-of Talarisy in 1539 (REM., intro., p. xxiii) and clerk of the diocese of Moray in 1545 (Laing, 495). Margret Gaddyrrer was a resident of Inverness in 1556 (Rec. Inv., I, p. 4), and five of the name appear in the Moray Commissariot Record between 1684 and 1800. In 1595 it was ordered that the ale charges of Alexander Gaderer in Spynie be regulated (SCM., II, p. 131), Janett Gaderer in Kinneder was accused of child murder in 1679 (IDR., p. 92), James Gatherer was minister of Old Aberdeen in 1733 (Aberdeen CR.), and Adam Geatherer was member of Gartly Company of Volunteers in 1798 (Will, p. 24).
