An Aberdeenshire surname. From Gaelic gall, a Lowlander, a stranger. The d is accretionary. Gaul is the less common form of the name. Jacobus Gald and Cristina Gald in Murthlac, 1550 (Illus., II, p. 261,262). John McAllaster gald in record 1619 (RPC., XII p. 112). John Gauld in Midtown of Achbegs 1686 (Moray), William Gell, witness at a baptism 1687 (SN&Q., V, 8), and George Gaull in the parish of Glass, 1716 (SCM., IV, p. 168). Robert Gauld, minister at Culsalmond, died in 1786, and James Gauld was member of Huntly Volunteers, 1799 (Will, p. 8). Four brothers Gauld from King Edward served in the first Great War as also James Gaul and John Gaul, brothers, from Turriff (Turriff). Gald 1766, Gall 1780, Gaull 1816.

Ronald Galda (G. gallda, 'pertaining to the Lowlands'), "Ronald the stranger," was so named from having been fostered by his mother's people, the Frasers, at a great distance from Moydert (SCM., IV, p. liv). See also Gall.
