It is the Scots form of English Gawayne, in French Gauvain, from Geoffrey of Monmouth's Walganus. In the Welsh Arthurian romances it appears as Gwalchmei, the name of the son of Arthur's sister (Rhys, Arthurian legend, p. 13).
