The Gazibeyoglu surname derives from the words gazi, meaning 'war veteran', Bey, meaning 'chieftain', and -oglu, meaning 'son'.

Gazi is is an individual who participated in ghazw, meaning 'military expeditions' or 'raiding'. The latter term was taken up by Turkic military leaders to describe their wars of conquest.

Bey is a Turkic title for a chieftain, and an honorific, traditionally applied to people with special lineages to the leaders or rulers of variously sized areas in the numerous Turkic kingdoms. The Ottoman state had started out as one of a dozen Turkish Gazi Beyliks, roughly comparable to western European duchies.

Oglu means 'son of' and refers to the lineage of the Gazi Bey.
