User-submitted Reference

From an Old Germanic language root, meaning 'person of the fields,' i.e. a farmer. The surname originates from southern Germany and Switzerland; many of the Geimans from those areas were Anabaptists who had their land seized and were forced to leave the country in the 17th and 18th century due to religious persecution. The Anabaptists resettled in the United States and formed communities that would eventually be known as the Amish or Mennonite. Most Geimans still live in Amish and Mennonite communities in traditional locations typical of these groups, such as Pennsylvania, but some left those communities and have branched out to other parts of the world over the last two centuries.
