This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the geld-herd,' a herdsman (geld and herd). A great patronymic in South Cumberland and Furness. To this day cows and ewes are advertized as geld cows and geld ewes, i.e. not with young (v. Towneley Mysteries). The geld-herd and cowherd (v. Coward) have left two of the oldest and most strongly ramified names in the Lake District; v. Herd for list of derivatives.

The editor adds, 'Geldherds are elsewhere called "pastores sterilium animalium,— hence the modern surname Geldert.'
