User-submitted Reference
Geller is an Ashkenazi Jewish nickname for a man with red hair, from the Yiddish gel, meaning 'red-headed' (Middle High German gel, meaning 'yellow'). There has been significant confusion with German gelb, meaning 'yellow', since the meaning change from 'yellow' to 'red' only took place in Yiddish and only with reference to people's complexion or hair coloring.
In Russia, it is also a Jewish variant of Heller, since Russian has no h and alters h in borrowed words to g.
- haffman97It derives from the occupational name for a 'town crier', for which the German word is geller. It is also a nickname for a man with red hair, from the Yiddish gel.
