A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Probably from Old English personal name Gislbrand. The first of the name appears to be Laurence Gillibrand, a friend and supporter of Bruce, who was granted a pension of £20 from the lands of Belhelvie, 1309. Laurence Gillibrand, perhaps his son, had a charter from Margaret de Bruis of her right to the lands of Little Morphie, 1345 (Echt-Forbes family charters, 1923, p. 31). In the following year, he was among the prisoners taken at battle of Durham (Hailes, II, p. 389). In 1355 Sir Laurence Gillibrand had grant from the earl of Mat of 22 pound lands of Echt, and before 1357, as Laurence Gylibrande, he witnessed a charter by Thomas, earl of Mer (CAB., p. 538). He was stewerd of the queen's household, 1359 (ER., I, p. 618). Laurence Gillebrand or Gilliebrand had charter of the lands of Suthayk in the sheriffdom of Dumfries from David II (RMS., I, App. II, 903). Another Laurence Gillebrande was charter witness in Aberdeen, 1426 (RMS., II, 55), The family gave name to the lands of Gillibrands.
