Genthon Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
May derive from the French adjective of personality "gentil", meaning "kind", "nice". Other possibilities include origin in the Old French "genterie" meaning having noble origins and attending Royal courts ("gentry" also comes from the same word), and a diminutive for "Jean" (equivalent to "John"). This could explain why there are different spellings, but of course bad transcriptions on early paperwork is also an explanation, again not excluding the other ones. Finally, the name Genton appears among Barbaric names. This is informatio I have read about my name in various books but I don't have specific references to give. There is no definite answer.
