Several persons of this name lived in Montrose in the seventeenth century, but the name is now extinct there (SHSM., I, p. 367). William Gentilman in Keig is in record in 1492 (CAB., p. 382), and John Gentleman in Legawin in 1582 and seven others of the name are recorded in the Commissariot Record of Brechin. Several others appear in the Commissariot Record of Dunblane. John Gentilman in Logie was excommunicated in 1624 (Logie, I, p. 89). Ann Gentleman is recorded in the parish of Bathgate in 1713 (Torphichen), and John Gentleman was shipmaster in Montrose in 1757 (Brechin). Weekley (p. 105) says the name is from 'an officer in a household,' and Bardsley has Robert Gentilman in Bedfordshire, 1273.
