Gerasi mean the title given by Ivan the Terrible Gerasi - 'Honorary'

Version 2. The history of the origin of the name Gerasimov.

On behalf of Gerasim (colloquially Garasim). From the Greek's Gerasmios '- respectable. Garan is a diminutive form of this name. Garsha is a derivative of the name Gerasim. The writer V. M. Garshin recalled: 'According to family tradition, our ancestor, Murza Gorsha, or Garsh, left the Golden Horde under Ivan III and was baptized'. Doubtful version: Tatar Murza could not bear a Christian name before baptism; the Turkic name Gorsha, or Garsh, no. (F) Garanichev (Kaduisk. At.). Patronymic is Garanich's middle name, which is based on the diminutive form of Garan's canonical male name Gerasim (possibly from Herman, Gerontius and others, but the Russians gave them much less often than Gerasim). (H) Other explanations of some surnames of this group are possible. Garasin from the dialect verb Garasit - to hit (Dahl) Geshin from the shortened form of Gesha from George or Gennady

Version 3.

The basis of the name Gerasimov was the church name Gerasimov. The canonical male name Gerasim comes from the Greek 'gerasmios' - 'venerable, respected.' This name has several patron saints. One of them, Rev. Gerasim of Jordan, was a monk from a young age. Around 450, he came to Palestine and settled on the Jordan River, where he founded a monastery. Once, Rev. Gerasim healed the wound of a lion, and the lion served him to death. The memory day of this saint is March 17 (4). Another patron of the name is Rev. Gerasim of Vologda, a native of Kiev. In 1147, he built a church in the name of the Holy Trinity and a monastery in the forest, half a mile from the Vologda River. Another patron of the name, Rev. Gerasim of Boldinsky (1490-1554) is an ascetic who founded a monastery on Boldinskaya Hill. Memorial Day is May 14 (1). Most likely, the founder of the Gerasimov clan occupied a rather high social position. This assumption is explained by the fact that the surnames formed from the full form of the name had mainly the social elite, nobles, or families that enjoyed great authority in the area, representatives of which the neighbors respectfully called their full name, unlike people from other classes who called themselves, As a rule, diminutive, derivative, everyday names. Among the famous representatives of the surname are Dmitry Gerasimov (c. 1465 - after 1535 or 1536), which went down in history as 'Ambassador Dmitry', Dmitry Tolmach, Dmitry Scholastik. Dmitry Gerasimov became famous as a Russian scribe, diplomat, translator ('Latin interpreter,' as the Nikon Chronicle calls him), a scientist and theologian, one of the first mediators between Renaissance European culture and the Moscow state.
