From the Norman personal name Germund. In early record it interchanges with Gernun. Ricardus Gernun witnessed David's great charter to the Abbey of Melrose, a. 1153 (Melros, 1). Richard Germayne granted the church of Lympetlaw to the Hospital of Soltre, c. 1221—31 (Soltre, p. 25), and in the reign of Alexander III Richard Germyn or Gernun appears as lord of Lympatlaw (ibid., p. 29). Nicholas, son of German witnessed a sale of land in Glasgow c. 1280—90 (REG., p. 198). A different name from St. Germain, which see.
