Gillani is the sub-caste of the Syed/Sayyid family who are descents from Prophet Muhammad and trace their lineage back to Imam Ali, who was first cousin and close companion of Prophet Muhammad. The family lineage of Gillanis refers to Sheykh Abdul Qadir Gillani. He was born in the district Gillan-e-Gharb of Kermanshah in Iran, from where the word Gillani is derived. As Arabic doesn't have the pronunciation for the letter "G" so they pronounce "J" instead as Jillani. Sheykh Abdul Qadir Gillani is also the founder of Qadirriya sufi order from where the derivative Qadri/Qaderi comes. You can find articles on him on Google and Wikipedia.
