Giles Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. —the son of Giles,' a curious familiar form for Egidius. It is very difficult to find a Giles in the 13th and 14th centuries registers, as it is all but invariably entered Egidius. Whether or no Giles was originally a contraction of Egidius, or a substitute for it, it is hard to say. The two seem to have nothing in common. I cannot but think that as Gill was familiar for Julia, so Giles at first represented Julius (v. Yonge, i. 188, for an interesting paragraph on the subject). We must remember that exactly the same accident has befallen Jack as representing John, as it does in England, yet, more correctly, James.

Jordan fil. Egidii, Lincolnshire, ibid.
Osbert fil. Egidii, Lincolnshire, ibid.
1564. Married — Nicholas Giles and Christian Newell: St Mary Aldermary.

From a Greek personal name popular in France in the Middle Ages, rendered AEgidius in Latin, whence Giles. William Gilis gave his land of Mosplat to the church of Lanark c. 1214 (Dryburgh, p. 157). Robert Geliss was chaplain, 1527 (Caldwell, p. 59), Jhone Gelis was one of an inquest on lands of Gowane (Govan) in the same year (Pollok, I, p. 258). Matthew Gellis was burgess of Abernethy, 1615 (Dunblane), Andrew Jeeles appears in Home, 1681 (Lauder), and John Geills was a wright in Gorballs, 1741 (Campsie). The most distinguished of the name was Peter Giles (1860—1935), late Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Geilston in Cardross parish, Dumbartonshire, takes its name from a family named Giles who formerly possessed the place.
