This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of William' or 'Guillaume,' from the nick. Gill, and diminutive Gil-kin. Possibly from Gill or Jill (v. Gill), but -kin was rarely added to girls' names, Malkin (Mary) being almost the only exception. Gilkes and Gilks are modifications of Gilkins, just as Perkes and Perks are of Perkins, or Dawkes and Dawks of Dawkins. And further, just as Guillaume gave us Gilkin, so William gave us Wilkin; and similarly, just as William gave us Wilcock, so Gilcock once represented Guillaume.
