Glinn filius Cilandres was one of the witnesses to a charter by Malcolm, second earl of Atholl of the church of Dul to St. Andrews (RPSA., p. 246). The Gillanderses of Arbuthnott probably stood in the same relation to the see of St. Andrews as the Gilleserfs of Clackmannan did to the convent of St. Serf. Gillandres Macleod is mentioned in 1227 (APS., I, p. 91), and another Gillandres was one of the assessors of the lands of Dunduff, 1231 (RD., p. 111). The Rosses in the north are known as Clann Annas, and Gillanders as a surname is often equivalent to Ross. Some of this name have probably Englished themselves as Anderson, which see.
