From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

GILLAODRAN: described in the Orkneyinga Saga under the year 1159 as "of a great family but a violent man." He incurred the displeasure of the king of Scots for manslaughter and other violent crimes and fled to the Orkneys, where he committed more manslaughter. He then went to the West coast and was slain in Myrkvifiord, probably Loch Gleann Dubh. In the Icelandic original his name is spelled Gilliodran, which represents modern Gaelic Gille Odhran, 'servant of (S.) Odran.' Maelduin mac Gillaodran "epscop Alban," i.e. bishop of St. Andrews, died 1055 (Tighernach).
