Gillatly Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

William Galithli witnessed a charter by Walter filius Sibald in favor of the Abbey of Arbroath c. 1200—07 (RAA, I, 94). Henry Gellatly, an illegitimate son of William the Lion, of whom little or nothing is known, was grandfather of Patric Galythly, one of the competitors for the Crown in 1291. Patrick Galythly, bergess of Perth, swore fealty to Edward I at Perth in the same year (Bain, II, 508). In 1296 a royal writ was issued to the sheriff of Aberdeen on behalf of Henry Golitheby or Galighly, who rendered homage in that year (ibid, II, p. 210,218). Ranald Galychtly was burgess of Dundee in 1461 (REB, II, 100), John Galichly of Ebruks sold the temple land of Lethindy in 1472 (Athole, p. 709), and in 1480 David Galychtlie was member of an assize in Aberdeen (CRA, p. 410). John Galychtly was tenant of Midil Drome in 1489 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 240), and appears in 1512 as John Galithleis of Mydil Drwrne (ibid, I, p. 285). Gilbert Galedy was admitted burgess of Dundee, 1592 (Wedd., p. 175), Agnes Golightlie in West Reston, 1628 (Lauder), and Janet Gellatie is recorded in 1683 (Brechin). The surname is still common in Perth, Carse of Gowrie, and in Dundee. The variant "Golightly" is explained as "Light-foot; a nickname for a messenger," but as Lower rightly points out, the name has nothing to do with lightness of foot. It "has many forms, to none of which a meaning can welI be attached;" but, as he says, "from the termination it is probably local." Alletrie 1700, Gelletlie 1735, Gellitlie 1687, Gellifly 1676.

Has nothing to do, I think, with lightness of foot. The name has many forms, to none of which a meaning can well be attached; but from the termination it is probably local.
