GILLEASALD: Gilleasald Mac Gilleandris witnessed a charter by Roger de Scalebroc of lands in Carrik in the reign of William the Lion (Melros, I, p. 25). As Gilleasald or Gilasald mac Gilleandres he witnessed charters by Duncan, son of Gilbert, son of Fergus, of lands in Carrie, c. 1200 (ibid., I, p. 22, 24). Prof. Watson suggests that the name means 'Oswald's servant.' The name of Gilaffald, one of the witnesses to the bounds of the grange of Kircwynni and the land of Culwen in Kirkgunzeon, 1289 (Holm Cultram, p. 88) is probably a miscopying of Gilassald (long ss misread ff).
