GILLENEF: Gaelic Gille Naomh or Gille nan Naomh, "servant of the saints." The name is often wrongly spelled in early records. Gillenem M'Colmane witnessed a charter of lands in Carrie in favor of Melrose Abbey c. 1180 by Raderic Mac Gillescop (Melros, I, p. 29). As Gillenem Accoultan he witnessed another charter by Roger de Scalebroc of lands in Carrik in the reign of William the Lion (ibid., I, p. 25). Patrick Mac gill Nef witnessed the gift of Kyllosbern (Closeburn) to the Abbey of Kelso c. 1200 (Kelso, 340). Gillenef, sencscallus de Strathearne, witnessed a confirmation charter by Henry, earl of Atholl, c. 1200 (RD., 148). As senescallus his name also appears as Gillenem, Gillenen, Gillenanem, Giltenenam, Gillenanof, Gillenief, Gillenefe, Gillenanemh, Guillinamene, and Gillenes (LIM.; LAC.). Gillenef Mc Gilherf, one of the chief men of the lineage of Clenafren of Wigtown, made peace with the king of England, 1298 (Bain, II, p. 253). Gilnef M'Ewin was a witness in Bute, 1491 (ADC., p. 203), Gilnew M'llwedy is recorded there, 1506 (RMS., II, 2987), Gillenew McVicar of Auchinbreck appears in 1525 (HP., IV, p. 26), Gilnow McMarksche appears in 1541 (ER., XVII, p. 626), and Gilnow M'Kaill appears in Bute, 1575 (Refours, Bute, 7). Gilnive McCavor was a tenant in Islay, 1686 (Bk. Islay, p. 497).
