GILLEONAIN: 'servant of (S.) Adamnan, which see. Formerly a Christian name in the Highlands, in the Macdonald family, and first recorded as Giolla-Adhamhnain, the name of the father of Somerled of the Isles. It was a favorite name in the Macdonald family, and subsequently passed into the family of Macneil of Barra. Giladuenan filius Dunegal witnessed a grant of lands in Carrie in the reign of Alexander II (Melros, I, p. 172). In another charter of the same period he appears as Gillauenan filius Dunegal (ibid., p. 173). Gilleghanan, son of the late John, Scriptor of Mule acolyte, was to be received, if found fit, into the monastery of S. Columba of Hy in 1353 (Pap. Lett., III, p. 490). Gilleownan Makneill in 1427 received from Alexander, lord of the Isles, a charter of the isle of Barra and the lands of Boisdale in South Uist. This charter does not exist in original but is cited in the confirmation to Gilleownan's grandson by King James IV in 1495 (RMS., II, 2287). Gillawnane McCrouder in Comrie was one of the witnesses to a charter to John de Cumre in 1447 (RMS., 11 640). In 1495 there is also mention of a Gilleownan Macpheill, grandson of Gilleownan. Gilliganan McNeill of Barray was one of the councillors of Donald, lord of the Isles in 1545 (Clan Donald, I, p. 371). Gillonane McMoy was tenant of Corpolan in Islay, 1541 (ER., XVII, p. 617). In Barra the name was pronounced Gill-Eonan, and Anglicized 'Galuon.' Gillownane M'Neill in Islay, 1686. The MS. of 1467 gives a genealogy of the clan 'Mhic-Gillagamnan' which Skene fancied wrongly to be the Madennans. Gillewan 1546, Gillewin 1516.
