The reason for including this name here is its close association with one restricted area in west Cork and the extent to which an immigrant family has multiplied: their pedigree is on record for a long period before they came to Ireland. The first to do so took part in the Essex expedition of 1599. Though not so numerous now, in 1853, when Griffith's valuation of Co. Cork was carried out, he recorded no less than 73 Gillman householders or landowners in the western part of the county, the great majority of them in the barony of East and West Carbery. In this respect they are comparable to another rather similar family the Kingstons (see More Irish Families, p. 266).
The name derives from Guillemin, the diminutive of Guillaume, the French form of William.
V. Gill and + man.
Cognate with Guillaume, the French form of William. Coming to Ireland with Essex in 1599 the family multiplied and became numerous in west Cork.
SIF 77
(English) The servant of Gill, a pet form of Gilbert (pledge, bright) and of Gillian (downy-bearded or youthful).
Probably derived from Gill, in its topographical meaning, like Milman from Mill, and Hillman from Hill. The Irish family (originally from England in 1690) have a tradition of their descent from a Crusader who cut off the right leg of a Saracen-an event supposed to be commemorated in the family arms. B.L.G.
I should have said-from residence near a Gill, q. v.; but both Dixon and Arthur are against me. Mr. D. derives it from the French surname, Villemain, which latter he (incorrectly) makes a diminutive of Guillaume, William. Mr. A. states that "the Gillmans are said to have come from the province of Maine, with William the Conqueror, and to have settled in Essex." See preceding article.
The Gillmans are said to have come from the province of Maine, in France, into England with William the Conqueror, and to have settled in Essex, England. Whether a Gaulman, a Gael, or Brookman, from gill, a brook, the same as kill in Dutch, is uncertain.
