GILMAKALI: Gylmakal,' vicar of Fotherues, was one of the witnesses to the great charter of Bishop Bricius founding the cathedral of Moray at Spyny, c. 1208—15 (REM., p. 43) Between 1224 and 1231 Gilmakali the judge of Caithness ('judex Catanie') witnessed a charter by Ferkar, earl of Ross, to Walter de Moravia of two davochs of land in Ross (ibid., p. 334). MocCoille, 'devotee of the veil,' was, according to the legend in the Liber Hymnorum, the name of the man who lifted up the veil over Brigit's head when the episcopal order was conferred on her by Bishop Mel (Lives of the saints from the Book of Lismore, p. 322—323).
