I should have said-from residence near a Gill, q. v.; but both Dixon and Arthur are against me. Mr. D. derives it from the French surname, Villemain, which latter he (incorrectly) makes a diminutive of Guillaume, William. Mr. A. states that "the Gillmans are said to have come from the province of Maine, with William the Conqueror, and to have settled in Essex." See preceding article.
