From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

GILMODAN: 'servant of (S.) Modan.' S. Modan was patron of Rosneath in Dumbartonshire, and appropriately enough it is there we find individuals bearing his name. Modan is from Aidan, which see, a diminutive of Aed, or rather of the later form of the name, Aodh, with the endearing prefix mo, 'my.' About the year 1199 Magister Michaele Gimuxlyn, 'persona de Neuet' (i.e. Neveth = Rosneveth = Rosneath), is witness to 'carta de Cochnach et aliis terris ecclesie de Kilpatrick' by Alwinus comes de Levenax (RMP., p. 157; Levenax, p. 12). 'Gilmothan filius sacriste de Neueth,' c. 1230, witnessed a charter by Heuel' (i.e. Amelec = Aulay), brother of Maldowen, third earl of Lennox, granting a saltpan in his land of Rosneth to the monks of Paisley (RMP., p. 211); and in 1294 John MacGilmothan is mentioned in an inhibition by the bishop of Glasgow (ibid., p. 203). He is probably the John Makelmochan of Dumbartonshire who rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 202). His seal bears an eight-rayed flower and the legend 'S' Johan Gilmotam' (ibid., II. 544). Adam Malmodan (showing the maol prefix) was one of an inquest made at St. Andrews, 1302—3 (ibid., p. 350).
