Gelruth. The Gillroid mac Gillemartan of the old Clan Cameron genealogy (1467) is evidently the Gilleroth filius Gillemartin who was witness to a grant of lands in Carrie in 1223 (Melros, p. 172). This Gilleroth is probably the Gilroth or Gilrod, aider and abettor of Thomas, the illegitimate son of Alan, lord of Galloway (ES., II, p. 496—498). Gylleroch (t misread as c) of Urquhart witnessed an agreement (compositio) regarding the lands of the church of Urquhart, 1233 (REM., 83). Gilruth (Gylruth or Gilrouth) was burgess of Roxburgh c. 1338 (Drybwgh, p. 261; BNCH., XXIV, p. 226). William Gilruth was one of the burgesses of Aberdeen chosen to accompany the provost to the field of Harlaw, 1411 (Fraser, p. 20). Thomas Gilrebth was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1444, and John Gilrutht the same in 1489 (NSCM., I, p. 9, 34), and Duncan Gilrucht contributed to repairs of a church there in 1508 (CRA., p. 79). Jhone Gilrowth deponed to the right boundaries of the Monk Myre, 1546 (Cupar-Angus, II, p. 4), and in 1555 is recorded the obit of William Gilrwif in Aberdeen (SCM., I, p. 78). James Gilrwitht was witness in a witch trial in St. Andews, 1575 (St. Andrews, p. 415). Denoyis Gilruff in Over Powneill, parish of Lesmahago, 1623 (Lanark CR.). William Gillreith (Gilreith or Gilrooth) was a farmer in Aberdeen, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 665,666). Gilrooff 1688.
