This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the girdler,' a maker of waistbands or belts. A girdler's gild seems to have existed in all the larger towns. The 'girdellers' formed part of the procession (1415) in the York Pageant. At Norwich, in 1533, they walked with the coverlet weavers and darnick-weavers (Blomefield, Norfolk); at Chester, with the poynters, cardmakers, and hatters (Ormerod's Cheshire).
