(Eng) belonging to Girdlestone (?Soms.) = prob. Gridel’s Estate. The place-name Grideliston [Old English tún, estate, etc.] and the pers. name Gridel both occur in a Somersetshire roll of A.D. 1327-8.

But Canon Girdlestone says that his family is of Norfolk origin and that he has traced his name to the Gerolveston [‘Ger-wulf’s Estate’] of the Hundred Rolls.
