Of local origin from Girdwood at Carnwath, Lanarkshire. James Girdvod was one of an inquest at Carnwath, 1524 (CBBC., p. 14). David Girdwood in Kerse, parish of Carnwath, 1622, and sixteen more are recorded in the Lanark Commissariot Record. Adam Girdwood, shoemaker in Edinburgh, is recorded in 1657 (Edinb. Marr.), Isobel Girdwooel in Grinlaw in 1675 (Lauder), and George Girdwood, 'incola de Sauchtone,' was retoured heir of Thomas Girdwood his grandfather in 1677 (Retours, Edinburgh, 1242). Rev. Thomas Girdwood (1802—1861) was Secession minister of Penicuik where he was ordained in 1831. His son and successor, Rev. William Girdwood, succeeded in Penicuik in 1862, and afterwards went out as missionary to Kaffraria. Old: Girdwod, Gyrdvid, Gyrdvod.
