From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
GIRIC: King Giric (Gyric, Girig, or Cirig), fourth in succession from Kenneth I, is termed by Pictish Chronicle Ciricius, and elaborated by Fordun (Chronicle, IV, 16) into Gregorius. He is the 'Gregory the Great' of the feudal fabulists and the legendary ancestor of the Macgregors. King Giric probably adopted S. Quiricus or Cyricus, martyr of Antioch, as his patron saint from the resemblance in sound to his own name, which comes from the root seen in Gaelic cir, a comb, crest. Girig is the source of modern Greic, which see. See Gillegirg. The influence of the Greek Church appears to have reached the east coast of Scotland as early as the first half of the eighth century. It was about that time that S. Andrew displaced Peter as the patron saint of Scotland.
