Girvan Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From Girvan, the name of a parish and town in Ayrshire. Andrew Girvane was custumar of Irvine, 1529, and Sir William Girvan was witness in same year (Ros, 1018), Gyrvane 1556. As Girvin in Edinburgh 1941.
Woulfe suggests as a possibility that Girvan may be an anglicized form of Ó Gairbhín and a variant of the well known Munster Garbháin (see Irish Families, p. 156). No evidence to support this supposition is forthcoming, and I prefer the alternative suggestion that it came from Scotland as a toponymic formed from the place-name Girvan. The fact that Girvan and Girvin are exclusively Ulster surnames, mainly found in Co. Antrim, where they are quite numerous, would seem to colloborate this.
In Co. Armagh Garron has been reported as equated with Girvin-one of the many strange synonyms recorded by Matheson. That is no proof of etymological connexion and even if it were it would link Girvin with Garrahan (q.v. supra), an entirely untenable theory and in any case in no way supporting Ó Gairbhín as the Gaelic form.
(Celtic) belonging to Girvan (Scotland) =? the Short River (the town is named from the river) [Gaelic gearr, short + abhainn, river]
A Scottish toponymic found in Ulster, mainly Co. Anitrim. SIF 79
Local. From the river and town of Girvan in Ayrshire, Scotland. In the Welsh, Gearafon or Gwyrddafon, implies the river flowing through the green flourishing place, from afon or avon, a river, and Gwyrdd, green, flourishing.
