From Gledstanes, Lanarkshire, now the name of a farm in the Upper Ward of Clydesdale, about four miles north of Biggar. Herbert de Gledstan or Gledestane of the county of Lanark, who took the oath of fealty to Edward I in 1296 is the first of the name on record. His seal bears an eight-leaved flower, and S' Herb'd' Gledstan (Bain, II, p. 204,558). William de Gledstanes witnessed a charter by Roger de Auldton, c. 1354 (Kelso, p. 387), and Sir William of Gledstanes, probably the same person, was present at the battle of Poitiers in 1356 (Fordun, I, p. 377n). Andrew de Gledstan was a witness in Brechin in 1364 (REB., I, 21), Andrew of Gledstanis was arrested in Norwich, England, in violation of the truce in 1396 (Bain, IV, 483), Magister Amere Gledstanys witnessed an instrument of sasine of the lands of Mernys and Nether-pollok in 1454 (Pollok, I, p. 176), Thomas Gledstane was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1480 (NSCM., I, p. 29), and in 1488 there was a concord between Stene Lokart and John of Gledstanis (Lanark, p. 3), Sir John Gladstone, father of the late William Ewart Gladstone, on 10th February 1835 obtained the royal license to change his name from Gladstones to Gladstone. The meaning of the name (ME. glede stan), is "the stone or rock frequented by the glede" a species of hawk. In the Museum in Hawick is preserved an old Bible which was formerly the property of the Gledstainss of that Ilk (Memories of Howick, p. 192). Gladistane 1487, Gladstanis 1664, Gladsteanis 1597, Glaidstainis 1634, Glaidstanis 1603, Glatdstouns 1631, Glattstouns 1599, Gledstaines 1649, Gledstains 1649, Gledstand 1504, Glestanis 1505. The name became Gladtsten in Sweden.
