A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the old lands of Glaister or Glacester in Angus. The name of the old family was originally 'de Dunde.' Eustace de Glasletter witnessed perambulation of the lands of Conan and Tulloch, 1254 (RAA., l, 366), and Beel de Glacelester witnessed a charter by Cristina de Valoniis c. 1256 (Panmitre, II, 141). John de Glasreth filius et heredes quondam domini Radulphi de Dunde had a receipt for ten marks due him in 1312 (ibid., p. 157; HP., II, p. 116). In 1315 as John de Glassereth, lord of that Ilk, he granted to Dugald Cambel and his wife his lands of Knocnagullaran (OPS., II, p. 45). Gilbert de Glassester mentioned in 1368 as dominus ejusdem (Panmure, II, p. 177) in 1371 had a grant from David II of he lands of Edderlings, Cambysenew, etc. (RMS., I, App. II. 1046), and as Gilbertus de Glascestre ad a grant from Robert II of all the lands of Glacestre and castle of the same in the sheriffdom of Argyll, 1374 (RMS., I, 461). In the first half of the fifteenth century their lands had passed into the possession of the Scrymgeours of Dundee. Murthacus Glastre was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1444 (NSCM., I, p. 8), Matthew Glastre was one of an assize there in 1448 (CRA., p. 401) and Andrew Glastir the same in 1457 (RAA., II, 108).
