Glas Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

An old Gaelic personal name found in Dunmaglas, Dun Mac Glais, 'fort of the sons of Glas' (Watson I, p. 238). See Glass.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

Either simply from the adjective glas, grey,' or a shortened form of Mac Gille glais families locally called barons from the fifteenth century till recently (Stodart, II). In 1506 there is record of a grant of half the lands of Langilculcreich in Bute to Alexander Glass (RMS., II, 2987). The name is also in record in Perth in 1674 (Methven, p. 103), and fifteen of the name are recorded in the Commissariot Record of Dunblane from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. Donald Glasse in Dingwall is mentioned in 1652 (IDR., p. 239), and John Glass was a 'bucher (butcher) in Elgine,' 1674 (ibid., p. 45). The Rev. John Glass, minister of Tealing, was founder of the religious body known as 'Glassites' (later Sandemanians). In a letter to the Oban Times some years ago the late Mr. Henry Campbell, an accurate genealogist, says:"I know of at least one case where a small family of Campbells showed every indication of forgetting their surname and settling down as Glass-because an ancestor happened I suppose, to go grey at an early age; and I have little doubt there are persons now labelled as Glass who are really Campbells." See also Macgilleglas. Glas is also an old Gaelic personal name, whence Dunmaglas (Dun Mac Glais), 'fort of the sons of Glas' (Watson I, p. 238).
