From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Late in the thirteenth century the lands of Glasforde in Strathaven, Lanarkshire, were in possession of a family who took their name from the lands. Alexander de Glasfrith was escheator south of the Forth in the English service in 1289—90 (Bain, II, p. 100). Roger de Glasford and Aleyn fiz Roger de Glasfrithe or Glasfrethe of the county of Lanark rendered homage in 1296. The seal of Aleyn bears the Agnus Dei and S' Alani de Glasfrit (ibid., II, p. 203,212, 213,544). About 1300 Sir Alan de Glasfrud witnessed a donation by Herberts Maxwell (RMP., p. 104), and Master in de Glasfrith was appointed sequestrator of the provostry of St. Mary's in St. Andrews by William Lamberton, bishop of St. Andrews, in 1306 (Bain, II, 1822). Alan de Glasfurth, c. 1317, witnessed a grant of the church of Largys to the monks of Paisley by Walter the High Steward (RMP., p. 237), and near the same date Alan de Glachfrith held the lands of Mucherach in the Lennox (Levenax, p. 61). John de Glassrith had an annuity granted him in 1328 (ER., I, p. 115), John of Glasfurde of Welshehawe was servant to James Hamilton in 1425 (Bain, IV, 986), Willelmus de Glasfurd witnessed a notarial instrument in 1413 (Pollok, I, p. 146), and John Glasfuird in Maxwood was retoured heir of John Duncane in Barnaycht in 1636 (Retours, Ayr, 315). The lands of Glasforde were granted to Johannes Sympille, son and heir of Thomas Sympille, by John, earl of Carric, which gift was confirmed by Robert II in 1373 (RMS., I, 490). Glasfoord 1694. The early forms of the place name point to a Welsh or Gaelic origin (Welsh ffridd, Gaelic frith, early loans from Old English frid, forest). Brigadier-General Glassford was chief of police in Washington, D. C., during Hoover's administration.
