This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the glasswright,' a maker of glass. Glasen in the instances below is strictly the adj.; compare gold-en, lin-en, wooll-en. The author of the History of Newcastle and Gateshead, curiously enough, describes one of his local worthies under date 1351 as Henry Glassen Wright ;p. 138). Three names would have astonished the said Henry's contemporaries not a little.

A glass maker. Andrew le Glasswright occurs in the records of Great Yarmouth in the XIV. century. Papers of Norfolk Archaeol. Soc., iv. 253. Little is known of the history of the glass manufacture in this country in the middle ages. In Sussex there are some traditions, but very little can be positively ascertained respecting it, notwithstanding Fuller's assertion that "plenty hereof is made in this county." In Thomas Charnock's Breviary of Philosophy we read: —
