From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A family of this name in the twelfth century were vassals of the Stewarts. Roger Glai or Roger filius Glaii appears between 1164 and 1177 as witness in charters by Walter filius Alani to the Abbey of Paisley (RMP., p. 86, 87). Between 1175 and 1199 Raan Corbeht gave to his man ('homini nostro', i.e. serf), William Gley, a plenary toft in Glasgow (REG., p. 37). Between 1207 and 1240 Roger, son of Glay (Glaii or Glayne), probably a son of the before mentioned Roger, appears frequently as a charter witness (RMP., p. 19,209; LSC., 66; LIM., p. xxix; Levenax, p. 14). Rogerus filius Glay witnessed a charter of Alexander II of a fishing in the thanage of Scon in 1234 (Scon, p. 41), Willelmus Gley 'tunc propositus' witnessed the sale of a land in Glasgow c. 1280—90 (REG., p. 198), and William le fiz Gley was appointed keeper of the Castle of Kyrktologhe in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 225). John del Glay or del Glaw of the county of Lanark rendered homage in 1296 (ibid., II, 812, and p. 204), and Alexander le fitz Glay was a Scots prisoner of war in Rockingham Castle in 1297 (ibid., 925). The family of Glay ended in an heiress, Isabel, daughter of Sir Roger de Glay, in the reign of David II. Donald Gley in Aberdeen, 1408 (CWA., p. 314).
