This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Godbold,' which see. This is the natural solution. At the same time the surname looks like a diminutive. Gabbett and Gabbott are diminutives of Gabriel, from the nick. Gabb. If Gabb was provincially pronounced Gobb, we should have to refer Gobbett to Gabriel. Nevertheless Godbold seems the natural parent. The first instance below almost settles the point; compare Arnold for Arnaud, and Arnett for Arnott, an exact parallel; also Garbett for Gerbold.
