This surname still exists in Aberdeenshire, and Goodsman is most probably a variant. James called 'Godisman' was canon of Brechin in 1298 (Pap. Lett., I, p. 575), and John Godisman was juror on an inquisition made at St. Andrews in 1303 (Bain, II, 1350). Johnne Goddisman in Tulifour was convicted of spulzie in 1510 (RSCA., I, p. 96—97), James Godsman in Kellie appears in 1633 (ibid., II, p. 371), and in 1644 and 1650 there are entries of payments to 'post' George Goddisman of Aberdeen (SCM., V. p. 163,174). James Godsman died in Old Deer in 1835, aged 100 years, and Willie Godsman was a well-known 'character' of Aberdeen in the first half of the nineteenth century.
