In the 13th century it occurred as Godard in Bucks, Middlesex, Cambridgeshire, and other counties (H. R.). Probably some of the Berkshire Goddards are of Wiltshire origin. The father of a gentle family of this name, who was buried in Hungerford Church in the middle of the 17th century, came from Standen Hussey, Wilts (A.). (W.). Edward Goddard, gent., resided at Eastwood Hay, Hants, in the beginning of the 17th century (Ashmole's "Berkshire").
