This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the gough,' i.e. the red-complexioned. A Welsh nickname, taken from the complexion of the face or hair, from the Welsh 'Goch'. This was a common cognomen in Wales, used in the style, Cadwallarr 'Goch' ap Gethin.
