Gogin Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Goggin.' The Old French nick, for Margaret was Gogo (Yonge). The popular diminutive would be Gogin. The entries of this form in the Hundred Rolls are so many that it was evidently very familiar. The final 'g', of course, is excrescent, as in Jenning for Jenin. 'James Goggin, head gamekeeper to Mr. Crosbie, Ardfert Abbey, ... was surprised to find his house in the possession of a gang of moonlighters' (Standard, 1886). I only suggest the above as the entry Gogwine seems to denote one of the innumerable fontnames with the suffix -win; compare Baldwin, Aylwin, Unwin, &c. (compare Golden for Goldwin).
Michael Goggyng, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
