This is Ó Gothraidh in Irish. It is derived from the personal name Gothfrith or Godefrid (god peace) said to have been introduced into Ireland by the Norsemen. As this became Godfrey in England and was subsequently adopted as a surname Gohery and Godfrey tend to become confused in Ireland, the latter being equally distributed throughout the four provinces while the rarer Gohery (also met as Geoghery and Gohary) is found in the district between Portumna and Birr, i.e. Offaly and north Tipperary.
In the Co. Tipperary hearth money rolls (1664-6), Gohery, Godfry and Godfrey are all listed. Goffrey again can cause confusion because it may also be a truncated form of MacGoffrey which has no connexion with Gohery but is Mac Gofraidh: MacGoffrie is entitled “Chief of his name” in a Fiant of 1591 relating to the Maguire country (Co. Fermanagh). A somewhat similar name Gahery is among the Co. Leitrim Jacobites outlawed after 1690 but this is probably a synonym of MacGaifrey which is also in the same list (see note on MacCaffrey in Irish Families p. 70).
