From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
People. called Going may be of different origins. Woulfe equates this name with MacGowan and Smith (Mac an Ghobhann); Going and Gowen have been recorded as in synonymous use in the Fermoy area; Weekley states that Going is an anglicized form of the French Gouin. The Co. Tipperary landed families of the name do not trace their pedigree further back then the end of the seventeenth century, but before that time Goings were located in Co. Tipperary: there are ten recorded as householders there in the hearth money rolls of 1664. In 1850, when Griffith's Valuation was made, there were 21 Going householders and two Gowings in South Tipperary, while in north Tipperary the number of Going householders was 13. Compared with these considerable figures the present numbers are small.
In 1822 Capt. Richard Going, of Newport, Co. Tipperary, was shot by Whiteboys in Co. Limerick in revenge for his implacable campaign against their organization. This incident, as well as the events which led up to it and its sequel, are related in Begley The Diocese of Limerick, Vol. III.
Of dual origin, viz a synonym of (Mac)Gowan and an anglicized form of the French Gouin. It has long been well known in Co. Tipperary. SIF 81
