The name of a family long notable in the mercantile annals of Dundee, and supposed by some to have come from Flanders. Goldman, however, is an Old English personal name. The first of the name mentioned in Dundee records is James Goldman, admitted burgess in 1562. The name is found on tombstones in the Howff Cemetery, Dundee, as early as 1605, and Peter Goldman, a member of the family there commemorated, is author of Latin "Poemata" in the Delitiae Poetarum Scotorum, 1637, I, p. 364—376. Fifteen of the name are recorded in the Commissariot records of Brechin. William Goldman, junior, was heir of William Goldman, merchant burgess of Dundee in 1614 (Inquis., 560). Golman 1632.
