From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a nickname. Possibly a free translation of the French Beaucorps as Handsomebody is of Gentilcorps. But there is no reason why it should not be of native growth. 'He's a good soul,' 'He's a kind body,' are still in popular use; compare busybody, an early compound.
Alicia Godbodi, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
1721. Baptised — Jacob, s. Thomas Gibbody: St. James, Clerkenwell.
A portly person-like the French Becaucorps: perhaps, however, an oath: ' By God's body,'-not unusual in the middle ages. The orthography in the H.R. is Godbodi, which rather confirms the latter derivation. Under the name Pardew will be found some remarks on surnames derived from Oaths. See however the remarks under Body.
GODBODY: Probably a medieval oath-"By God's body."
