This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Godiva' (Yonge, ii.' 76). A common name in Domesday. Godric and Godiva were the Jack and Jill of their period. The Norman nobles derisively styled Henry I and his Queen by these two names. Professor Freeman, quoting William of Malmesbury, says, 'Norman insolence mocked at the English king and his English lady under the English names of Godric and Godgifu' (v. 170). This personal name lasted till the 17th century.
