GOODGROOM: Grome originally meant simply a servant. Among the Domesd. tenants-in-chief in co. Warwick was a Willelmus Bonvalest, of which William Goodgroom would be a literal translation. A Bonvalet occurs in the H.R., as also a Gode Grum and several Le Godegrums. Or, taking the prior syllable as the name of the Divine Being, it may mean 'God's servant,' for we find, in the same records, Godeknave, and Godknave. ' Knave,' it must be remembered, was anciently no disgraceful epithet, but meant simply child or servant. See Gilchrist, &c.
