This surname is derived from a nickname. 'good Hugh.' A common spelling of Hugh was Hew, found in parish registers till the close of last century. Hence also Goodhew. One of a class of compounds made out of the favourite font-names of the time; compare Goodrobert, Prettyjohn, Meiklejohn, and the French Bonjean. Goodhue is the chief American form. 'Nicholas Goodhue went out to Virginia in the ship James in 1635'(Hotten's Lists of Emigrants).

In the time of Henry VIII., John Goodhewe held property in Seasalter and Hernehill, and in 1511 John Godhew was master of Wye College; in Elizabeth's reign, a Goodhugh owned a manor in Sturry (H.). Richard Goodhugh of Tunbridge was sheriff in 1697; and the family possessed the manor of Sheldhurst in the reign of George I. (H.).
