From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Stodart (II, p. 385) says Goodlet, old Gudlade, is an old surname and occurs in the neighborhood of Stirling in the fourteenth century. It is also an old surname in Fife, James Gudlad, king's sheriff, appears there in 1491 (Dundas of Dundas, p. lxvii). John Gudlawid was witness in Linlithgow, 1531 (Johnsoun). The name occurs in Perth in 1543 as Gudlat. Robert Guldlett, maryner in Kinghorn, was slain in 1574 when engaged at the fishing on the west coast of Ross-shire (Coll., p. 100—101), and David Guldlaid, who appears as a scribe in St. Andrews, 1585 (St. Andrews, p. 550), may be David Gvdlad (1594) whose tombstone appears in St. Andrews churchyard (PSAS., XLV, p. 536, ill.). Joannes Guldlat of Uphall was heir to John Grahame, 1602 (Inquis., 94). John Guldiaw, cordiner in Dysart, 1641 (Dysart, p. 51), Henry Guldlat of Abbotishauch appears in 1043 (Inpuis., 2832), and David Guldlaid was retoured heir of David Guldlaid, quondam bailie of St. Andrews, his father, 1645 (Retours, Fife, 649). Alexander Gudlait in Airth, 1655 (Bruces of Airth, p. cx), and in 1671 a criminal charge was made against John Guldlet or Guldlett of Abbotshall (Just. Rec., II, p. 57, 74). Some early sixteenth century 'ferrylouper' (the name given a Scottish settler in Orkney and Shetland) from Fife, carried the name to the Shetland Islands, where it is still found as Goodlat, Goodlet, and Gudlad, and pronounced Goylat or Goalet. Isabella Goodlet died in Edinburgh, 1941. In Shetland the name is confined mainly to "The Ness," Tingwall, and Burra. Goodlate 1624 Goodlatt 1750, Gudlat 1625, Gudlet 1613. Weekley (p. 231) compares this name with French Bonvillain and Bonvolet.
